In 2014, Charles Johnson started six games for the Vikings and caught 31 passes for 475 and two touchdowns. Entering the 2015 season, Johnson’s star was on the rise. Projected to start and have a significant role in the Vikings’ passing game, Johnson injured a rib in week 3 against the Chargers. Stefon Diggs got the start in week 4 and never looked back. Now Johnson will have an uphill battle for playing time, with Diggs basically guaranteed a starting spot and rookie Laquon Treadwell hot on his heels.

Another reason for Johnson to be looking over his shoulder is Cordarrelle Patterson. If you listen to the coaches this offseason, they all seem to be singing his praises. If CP84 can elevate his game to become a competent receiver, he will likely earn more playing time because of his excellent athletic abilities. As of right now, the Vikings’ depth chart at wide receiver should look like this:

  • Stefon Diggs
  • Laquon Treadwell
  • Jarius Wright
  • Charles Johnson
  • Cordarrelle Patterson
  • Adam Thielen

Johnson is entering the final year of the 3-year, $1.53 million contract he signed in 2014. With a low cap hit, and the moderate production he brings, Johnson is unlikely to be cut. However, if there is a team out there who needs a wide receiver, Johnson could be very attractive.
