Stock Down

Joe Berger had a bit of a down day, allowing a few pressures up the middle. The most memorable play came when Tom Johnson beat Berger off the snap and got past him for immediate pressure and what would have been a sack. While he was by no means awful the rest of the day, Berger was outperformed by fellow center John Sullivan, who took all the first team reps. If he’s going to beat out Sullivan for the starting job, Berger will have to perform much more consistently and avoid lapses in pass protection.

CJ Ham struggled at various points in the practice. In addition to fumbling a handoff in 9 on 7 play, Ham dropped a pass on a flat route that hit him right in the hands. Moreover, Ham simply didn’t show the burst and athleticism that teams look for in running backs. With the position pretty much set on the 53-man roster and fellow practice squad candidate Jhurell Pressley showcasing good hands, outstanding acceleration, and solid vision, Ham appears to have his work cut out for him.

Willie Beavers has had an up and down training camp thus far, and today he was clearly down. After following up a good first day of contact with an inconsistent second day, Beavers struggled once again. Allowing pressure from Danielle Hunter on multiple occasions during pass protection, Beavers appeared to be out of position and slow to react. Beavers has the power to succeed as a guard, but he will need a lot of coaching and technical refinement to eventually do so.
