Watch for Andre Smith

The Minnesota Vikings offensive line took a hit when it was announced that Phil Loadholt would be retiring. His Achilles tendon injury combined with other ailments had him make the hard decision to hang up his cleats. Thankfully, the team might be prepared for this loss.

Andre Smith wasn’t one of the best right tackles in the NFL last year. His struggles have been documented, but he should be an upgrade from last year’s starter, T.J. Clemmings based on experience alone. But signing Smith now looks like a genius move that doesn’t leave a gaping hole left for an inexperienced player.

This experience is necessary because of the responsibility a right tackle has in the system. Not only will he be creating holes for a once-in-a-generation running back like Adrian Peterson, but he is protecting young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater as well.

He will be facing off against former teammate Carlos Dunlap on Friday, who is absolutely no slouch. This will be a fun first test to watch for Smith, who the team hopes can be more than just a one year stop-gap for the team.
