The Minnesota Vikings made a pair of roster moves on Saturday, August 20, 2016, signing quarterback Brad Sorensen and releasing running back Kevin Monangai.
Saturdays might be for getting chores done around the house or catching some preseason football games, but the Minnesota Vikings were still at work today, announcing a pair of roster moves.
On the team’s official website, the announcement was made that the team had parted ways with one of their running backs in order to add another quarterback to the roster. This was likely in response to the previous preseason game which saw Bridgewater sit out of the action while Hill and Stave split the snaps.
Now, the Minnesota Vikings will have quarterback Brad Sorensen to evaluate and take some snaps this preseason. Sorensen was a 7th round pick of the San Diego Chargers back in 2013. Since then, he spent some time with the Titans before returning to the Chargers.
Sorensen has yet to throw an NFL pass, but this is an opportunity to get another look at a quarterback while letting Shaun Hill take some time off, as the team already knows what they have in the veteran passer.
To make room for Sorensen, the Vikings released running back Kevin Monangai. Monangai’s run with the Vikings was a sort one, as he was signed by the team on August 5, 2016. But with a roster packed with running back depth and the injury to Taylor Heinicke, adding more quarterback depth is a move that just makes sense for the team.
Here is the announcement on the Minnesota Vikings official website:
"“The Vikings on Saturday announced the signing of free agent quarterback Brad Sorensen and the release of running back Kevin Monangai.Sorensen played quarterback at Southern Utah and was drafted by the Chargers in the seventh round (221st overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft.Sorensen is 28 years old and joins a room that includes third-year pro Teddy Bridgewater, 15-year vetShaun Hill and rookie Joel Stave. Taylor Heinicke is currently on the non-football injury list.”"

Best of luck to Kevin Monangai on his future endeavors and welcome to the team, Brad Sorensen. If the Minnesota Vikings like what they see from Sorensen, it could be interesting to see what they do with the passer following the remainder of the preseason.
