Minnesota Vikings’ wide receiver Stefon Diggs was named the NFC offensive player of the week for his week 2 performance against the Green Bay Packers
The NFL has announced the selections for players of the week, and Minnesota Vikings’ second year wide receiver Stefon Diggs ran away with the NFC player of the week award. Securing nine catches for 182 yards and a touchdown, Diggs did everything in his power to help the Vikings defeat the rival Green Bay Packers under the bright lights of Sunday Night Football.
Diggs’ 182 receiving yards were the most of any player in week 2 of the NFL, and his 285 for the season is tops in the league. Most impressively, Diggs was able to put up those phenomenal numbers with Shaun Hill and Sam Bradford throwing him the ball.
After watching Diggs play last year and this preseason, it was clear he is a very talented player. But to be able to put up stats regardless of who is throwing the ball? That’s approaching super star level.
With another few weeks of practicing together, there is no doubt the connection between Diggs and Bradford will only get better. Currently, Diggs is on pace for 128 catches (which would be a Vikings team record and the fifth highest in league history), and 2,280 yards (which would obliterate the league record of 1,964 set by Calvin Johnson).
Diggs will likely regress some, as this pace is nearly impossible. But his production the last two weeks have not been a fluke, and it’s great to see the Vikings actually have a true number one WR.
There were 19 wide receivers drafted before Diggs in the 2015 NFL draft. That kind of motivation can stick with a player for their entire career, so it’s great to see Diggs is able to use that chip on his shoulder and turn it into production on the field.
