Newman expects to play in 2017, whether it is with the Vikings or not

The veteran cornerback still remains a free-agent, but he could be making a return to the Minnesota Vikings’ roster for another season.
At 38-years-old, Terence Newman has spent almost half of his life as a cornerback in the NFL. After his contract with the Minnesota Vikings ran out after the 2016 season, some felt that Newman might finally call it a career and retire from the league this offseason.
However, retirement does not seem to be in the cornerback’s future anytime soon. At least according to him on Tuesday when he appeared on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Newman has spent the last two seasons with the Vikings and has been an important part of the team’s continuously improving defense since Mike Zimmer was hired as Minnesota’s head coach in 2014.
As for if he will be returning to the Vikings next year, that decision seems to be more in the hands of the team than Newman. Minnesota certainly appreciates the cornerback’s contributions during the last two seasons, but they may want to finally take a chance on former first-round draft pick Trae Waynes as one of the team’s two starting corners next year.

Even if he does not re-sign with the Vikings, Newman should be able to catch on somewhere else as he has not shown any real drastic signs of decline. If he smart, he should pull a Brett Favre and wait until after training camps have ended this summer before he signs with another team to keep his body as fresh as possible before the start of the 2017 season.
