The Minnesota Vikings announced on Friday that the team has decided to waive the former quarterback from the University of Nebraska.

Like most college football players, Tommy Armstrong had aspirations of making it to the NFL while playing quarterback at the University of Nebraska. Armstrong wanted to fulfill his dreams so bad that he even made a position switch from quarterback to safety in order to give himself a better chance.

Armstrong was invited by the Minnesota Vikings in May to tryout for the team during their rookie minicamp. He was not signed immediately, but the Vikings decided to add him to their roster as a safety a few weeks ago.

Following the conclusion of Minnesota’s minicamp this week, the team announced on Friday that Armstrong has been waived.

Last week, the former quarterback received some praise from Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer regarding his athleticism and potential as a safety for the team.

"“I think he is a really good athlete, and you can see some of the traits we look for in defensive players; the bursts, the acceleration, the size. Obviously he is still trying to learn some of the basic techniques of things and that will take a while, but he is a good, quality kid to work with, and has a lot of upsides.”"

Despite the positive talk from Zimmer, Armstrong’s recent performances during the team’s practices obviously were not enough to convince Minnesota to keep him around. It is possible that he could return to the Vikings before training camp begins in July, but for now it looks like Armstrong’s NFL dreams will not be coming true in Minnesota.
