Former Minnesota Vikings WR Charles Johnson waived by Panthers
By Adam Carlson
The Carolina Panthers have waived former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Charles Johnson, but what is next for the intriguing pass catcher in 2017?
At one time, Charles Johnson looked like he could be a stud wide receiver for the Minnesota Vikings. However, injuries hampered his play and the team allowed him to leave in free agency, where he landed with the Carolina Panthers.
Sadly, Johnson’s opportunity in Carolina came to an end on Tuesday when it was announced on the official Carolina Panthers website that he had been waived along with defensive end Ryan Delaire.
Minnesota Vikings
Johnson was waived with the injured designation, which means that if he clears waivers he would move to the Panthers with the Injured Reserve status.
After being plucked by Minnesota from the Cleveland Browns practice squad, Johnson impressed in his first year with the Vikings. He caught 31 passes for 475 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2014 but failed to reach those kind of numbers in the next two seasons, where he had under 300 yards receiving and zero touchdowns in each year.
It is expected that Johnson will clear waivers and return to the Panthers on Injured Reserve, but he could be an interesting prospect for a team looking to add depth to their wide receiver corps.
In his place, Carolina has signed center Greg Van Roten. Van Roten has played with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers, and Seattle Seahawks as well as the Toronto Argonauts in the CFL.
