Receiver Reduction

Minnesota entered training camp with a multitude of wide receivers on their roster many of whom were young players hoping to secure a roster spot for the first time. The coaching staff must have been impressed as the Vikings kept open 6 roster spots for receivers as well as placing Michael Floyd on the reserve/suspended list.

As suspected the veterans all made the team, including Jarius Wright who some speculated could be waived to make way for younger options. 5th round draft pick Rodney Adams and preseason star Stacy Coley both avoided the dreaded call into the office and made the 53 man roster despite many observers believing they were in competition for one roster spot.

One young pass catcher who can count himself unlucky not to make the team is Cayleb Jones. After a solid performance in the 3rd preseason game against Seattle, Jones was one of the few players to shine in the loss to Miami last week. Jones played the majority of the game catching 9 of his 10 targets for 127 yards and a touchdown. His performance was even more impressive considering the quality of the passes he was trying to coral from Heinicke and Leidner.

The rest of the releases at receiver were predictable for those who had watched the Vikings preseason affairs. Isaac Fruechte certainly didn’t make the most of the opportunities presented to him and I would wager he dropped more passes than he caught. R.J Shelton didn’t have a single catch in the preseason and was waived with the injury designation. After another disappointing preseason Moritz Böhringer was released for a second straight year, hopefully he won’t grace the state of Minnesota again.

At first glance the Vikings appeared to make the right moves in regards to their receiving cops. You could make the argument for Jones over Wright considering the latter’s recent lack of production.

Luckily Jones cleared waivers, enabling the Vikings to add him to their practice squad and hopefully Adams and Coley can remain with the team once Floyd’s suspension ends.
