Special teams ace Marcus Sherels became the Minnesota Vikings franchise leader in punt return yards during Week 2 in Pittsburgh against the Steelers.

Over the last several seasons, there have been a lot of changes made on the Minnesota Vikings roster. Coaches, players, and even the stadium where they play have all changed, but there has been one constant.

Marcus Sherels always finds a way to stick with the Vikings. His excellent play on special teams always lands him a spot on the team and his excellent play on punt returns has also earned him several Special Teams Player of the Week awards.

Sherels earned another accolade in Week 2 of the NFL season when he became the franchise leader in punt return yardage as shared on the official Twitter account of the Vikings.

The Vikings defense did a great job in containing the Steelers as well as they could in the game, forcing Jordan Berry to punt 5 times. Of those, Sherels only got one opportunity to return, netting 12 yards.

Those 12 yards were enough to get Sherels to 1,822 yards and the franchise record for punt return yardage. The previous record was held by Leo Lewis, who only had a two yard lead on Sherels entering the Week 2 contest.

Of course, the number of punt returns for Sherels should continue to grow. At only 29 years old, the Rochester, Minnesota native has plenty of time to return many more punts in his career and set the bar very high for whoever may be next to attempt breaking his franchise record.

In fact, the next opportunity Sherels will get to add to his total is on Sunday, September 24, 2017 when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to U.S. Bank Stadium.

Congratulations to Marcus Sherels on setting a Minnesota Vikings franchise record for punt return yardage and hopefully he can continue to set the bar very high for the next person to become the team’s return man.
