The 1500 ESPN writer thinks that Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown could be the quarterback tandem for the Minnesota Vikings next season.
The official start of the NFL’s 2018 free agency period is getting closer and closer as each day goes by (March 14 at 4:00 p.m. ET). As this day continues to approach, so does the Minnesota Vikings’ decision for who will be their starting quarterback next season.
Many have weighed in on who the Vikings’ choice will end up being and this debate will continue until a decision is actually made.
On Sunday, 1500 ESPN’s Matthew Coller provided some thoughts on not only who could be Minnesota’s starting quarterback in 2018, but who the team’s backup will be as well.
He wrote about five possible starter and backup combinations for the Vikings next season and their chances of happening. His combo with the highest likelihood of becoming a reality in 2018 was the pairing of Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown.
Coller explained why he believes Bridgewater and McCown could be a part of Minnesota’s quarterback room next season.
"“Bridgewater still has a ceiling to reach. He’s already proven that he can win. If he comes back healthy, the Vikings could very well have their QB for the next decade. In the worst case scenario, McCown gives them a chance to compete.”More from The Viking Age6 biggest draft steals in Minnesota Vikings historyFormer Vikings first-round pick could reportedly return to NFC NorthBears analyst has extremely embarrassing Kirk Cousins take6 Vikings who (maybe) won’t make the 53-man roster in 2023Predicting what the Vikings will do in the 2023 NFL Draft based on 2022"
If 2017 proved anything for the Vikings, it was that a capable backup is needed no matter who the team selects to be their starter next season.
McCown not only has connections to Minnesota’s new offensive coordinator John DeFilippo (the two worked together in Oakland and Cleveland), but the quarterback’s play has been solid during the last few seasons. Him filling in for a game or two if need be in 2018 would be far from the scariest scenario imaginable.
Coller did also play devil’s advocate and wrote that, “there’s a chance the Vikings could end up back at square one,” if Bridgewater is unable to stay healthy or continue to progress into a top quarterback. But that outcome could also be said for whichever signal caller Minnesota chooses to be their starter next season.

For now though, this is just another opinion to throw into the bucket of the Vikings offseason quarterback discussion.
