After months of speculation, the free-agent quarterback will reportedly sign a contract with the Minnesota Vikings when the new league year begins on Wednesday.
For the past few weeks, the idea of the Minnesota Vikings actually signing Kirk Cousins to be their quarterback this offseason continued to consistently pick up steam as time went by.
At the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine is where talk of Cousins to the Vikings really began to heat up. Following the combine, Minnesota was presumed to be the favorite to land the free-agent quarterback this year.
Monday was the first day in which teams were allowed to negotiate potential contract terms with the agents representing players scheduled to hit free agency. Nothing really emerged that indicated Cousins was signing with the Vikings, but that seemed to change on Tuesday.
Minnesota Vikings
According to WCCO TV’s Mark Rosen, the free-agent quarterback is expected to sign a deal with Minnesota once the new league year begins on Wednesday , March 14 at 4 p.m. EST.
Rosen is also reporting that his source for the information is saying that Cousins will earn around $28 million per year. Full terms of the deal will likely be released closer to when the quarterback actually signs a contract.
With Cousins, Minnesota will be getting a player who has thrown for at least 4,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in the past three seasons. The kind of consistent production the Vikings haven’t seen from a quarterback since Daunte Culpepper was chucking the ball around for them in the early 2000s.
Since they have yet to be released, the terms of Cousins new deal should be quite intriguing. How many years did Minnesota lock him down for? Is the contract front-loaded or back-loaded?
