MINNEAPOLIS, MN - SEPTEMBER 1: Sharrif Floyd

The NFL ruled on Wednesday that the defensive tackle’s rookie contract will not toll into 2018, making him no longer a member of the Minnesota Vikings.

It’s been quite some time since Sharrif Floyd last played in an NFL game. Not since Week 1 of the Minnesota Vikings’ 2016 season has Floyd suited up for a matchup.

The reasoning for his absence is rather unfortunate.

The defensive tackle underwent surgery to repair a knee injury in September 2016 and it resulted in him sustaining nerve damage in his quadriceps. Since then, Floyd has remained as a member of the Vikings.

That was until the new league year began on Wednesday and the NFL announced that his contract would not be tolled through the 2018 season. With the ruling, Floyd is now an unrestricted free-agent.

According to the Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling, the defensive tackle and Minnesota are still trying to sort out how much money he should be owed for the 2017 season, which he did not participate in. Floyd thinks he deserves his full salary for last year, while the Vikings are attempting to figure out a way to not pay the entire amount since his nerve injury occurred off of the football field.

Due to his contract not tolling, Minnesota now has an extra $6.7 million to spend this offseason.

At this point, it’s hard to predict if Floyd will ever play again in the NFL. It’s been a long time since he last hit the field for a regular season game and nerve issues a not something to mess around with.

During the time that he actually was on the field for the Vikings, the young defensive tackle was an integral part of their defense. He was definitely a player that appeared to have his career headed in the right direction.

However, Floyd’s knee surgery unfortunately caused more harm than good and it may result in his NFL career coming to a close at just 25-years-old.
