It turns out that the Minnesota Vikings didn’t exactly have to shell out the big bucks to land their newest wide receiver.
Last week, the Minnesota Vikings were able to add another free-agent to their roster this offseason in former Chicago Bears wide receiver Kendall Wright.
Based on his experience (in the NFL since 2012) and his recent production (led the Bears in receiving last season), some expect Wright to be able to challenge for the Vikings’ third receiver spot on the team’s 2018 depth chart.
Terms of Wright’s contract with Minnesota were unknown at the time of the initial announcement last Friday. But thanks to the work of the Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling on Tuesday, the details of the receiver’s deal with the Vikings have now been revealed.
Somehow, Minnesota was able to convince Wright to sign for such a small amount. The receiver likely had offers from other teams this year, but playing for the Vikings and catching passes from Kirk Cousins is clearly something that persuaded Wright to sign his latest deal.
"“He was a big part of the decision as well because I played with talented quarterbacks in my career, but I’ve never played with one as Kirk Cousins’ caliber.I’ve never played with a quarterback that threw for 4,000 yards, so that was definitely a big reason.”"
The length of his contract with Minnesota is also for just one year. This not only allows Wright to prove his worth to the rest of the NFL in 2018, but it also lets the Vikings take a low risk on a player with a pretty decent upside.
Next: Which remaining 2018 free-agents could the Vikings sign?
If Wright does well next season, then Minnesota’s front office will look like a bunch of geniuses. And even if the receiver doesn’t produce at a satisfying level in 2018, the Vikings won’t be stuck paying him anymore money after next season.
