Several players were signed away from the Minnesota Vikings on big contracts, meaning the team is set to get compensatory picks during the 2019 NFL Draft.

The formula for determining compensatory draft picks based on players lost and gained in free agency is a complicated one, but it appears as though the Minnesota Vikings are in line to get some extra selections in the 2019 NFL Draft.

According to Over The Cap, the Vikings are projected to receive four compensatory picks in the upcoming draft with selections ranging from the third round all the way down to the seventh round.

Here is the list of picks Minnesota is currently estimated to receive and the player lost that has the Vikings in that spot to earn the selection:

The Vikings losing quarterback Sam Bradford would have given them another third-round compensatory selection. However, that loss was offset by the signing of Kirk Cousins this offseason and will not result in a pick.

Similarly, the signing of Sheldon Richardson in Minnesota offsets the loss of running back Jerick McKinnon in free agency to the San Francisco 49ers and will likely result in another wash earning no selection.

OTC notes that if Bridgewater is released by the Jets, he will no longer earn the team a selection. The same is said for Tom Johnson or Shamar Stephen if their losses end up being worth a selection due to Teddy’s release or other transactions made.

Also, if another free agent is signed away from a team for more than $2.1 million, the loss of Shamar Stephen would no longer be worth a compensatory pick due to there only being 32 total picks distributed.

The idea that the Vikings can earn a compensatory selection for Tramaine Brock is an entertaining one since his time in Minnesota was uneventful after being traded for using a seventh-round pick. It appears as though the team will get their investment back on their one-season rental thanks to the Broncos giving him a deal worth $3 million.

Despite the projection and situation with the late round compensatory picks, the website makes sure to note that the third round pick should be ‘as solid as they come’ and Vikings fans should feel confident about that selection.

Giving Mike Zimmer, Rick Spielman, and the rest of the Minnesota Vikings extra ammunition to move around the board and select players can be a great thing and help the team land even more prospects on a team already loaded with talented individuals.
