Mike Remmers probably moving to right guard for Minnesota Vikings
By Adam Carlson
Mike Remmers was paid handsomely to be the Minnesota Vikings right tackle in free agency, but now it appears he will move to inside the offensive line.
Before the start of the 2017 NFL season, the Minnesota Vikings made a big splash in free agency by signing Riley Reiff and Mike Remmers to be the bookends for their offensive line. Those acquisitions were supposed to stabilize the tackles for the next five years, but that may not be the case going forward.
Lately, there has been a lot of speculation about where Mike Remmers will end up on the offense this season. While he was brought in to be the right tackle, he filled in last year at guard when Nick Easton and the idea of whether or not he will stay at tackle or move to be a guard full-time is a hot debate.
Recently, that situation got a lot clearer. According to Vikings.com, head coach Mike Zimmer spoke about the situation during a KFAN radio broadcast and stated that he will, “probably,” be playing guard for the 2018 season.
If this ends up being the case, it would complete a majority of the spots on the offensive line, making the starters look like this:
- Left tackle: Riley Reiff
- Left guard: Nick Easton
- Center: Pat Elflein
- Right guard: Mike Remmers
- Right Tackle: (unknown)
Of course, Zimmer will likely make Remmers earn the starting job at guard by beating out current players like Danny Isadora, Tom Compton, and Colby Gossett during training camp and the preseason. However, the praise he has been receiving from the Vikings head coach makes it sound like he’s got a leg up in the competition.
"“I think Mike is a very, very aware player. He can see the combination blocks and come off on the linebacker very quickly and understand those things, so I thought that was a good part of his game, and hopefully it will continue.”"
If Remmers is the right guard, this means the right tackle spot will be the biggest battle to watch in training camp and preseason. Rashod Hill has been working hard to earn a starting role, Tom Compton can play the position, and rookie Brian O’Neill may need some time to adjust to the NFL before taking on a starting gig.
Next: Way too early Vikings 2018 record prediction
Remmers is in the second season of his 5-year contract worth $30 million according to Spotrac and needs to find a stable role in the Vikings offense. Hopefully, the team will be able to find the best possible combination of blockers to protect quarterback Kirk Cousins and make holes for Dalvin Cook.
