Vikings Preseason 2018: 5 things to watch vs. the Denver Broncos
By Chris Schad
Daniel Carlson vs. Kai Forbath
To the surprise of many, this battle is still a thing. The Vikings traded up in the fifth-round to draft Carlson out of Auburn last April and that was seen as a death sentence for Forbath.
As we head into the preseason, Forbath is still around and that could make field goals interesting for Saturday and beyond.
At this point, Carlson has shown he has the stronger leg of the two, but he needs to show that he can control that to be an accurate kicker.
Forbath’s advantage is that he has made kicks in clutch situations (including makes from 49 and 53 yards during the Vikings’ playoff victory over the New Orleans Saints last year) and making kicks in those conditions are difficult to duplicate on the practice field.
If Carlson can connect on some kicks, it will go a long way towards sending Forbath to his next team. If the rookie shanks a couple though, this battle could be wide open.
