6 pleasant surprises at Vikings training camp this year
By Adam Patrick
Mike Hughes – CB
Hughes was the Vikings’ first-round draft selection this year, so it’s clear he is a very talented player. People probably just didn’t realize how fast the young corner would catch on to how things are done at the pro level.
Due to his size (5-foot-11, 191 pounds), Minnesota has been using Hughes mostly as one of their slot cornerbacks in camp this year. Despite the fact that he spent the majority of his college career covering receivers on the outside, Hughes transition to the inside has gone relatively smooth.
The rookie corner has even received some rare praise from Mike Zimmer this year already.
So Hughes is getting compliments from Zimmer and holding his own against the likes of Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs so far this year. Sounds like his time with the Vikings is off to a pretty impressive start.
Despite playing well, Minnesota’s rookie corner likely still won’t begin the upcoming season with a ton of snaps on the team’s defense. But if the Vikings end up needing to give Hughes more time on the field due to other players being injured, they should feel confident about the rookie’s chances to get the job done.
