With a new quarterback and a new offensive coordinator, can the Minnesota Vikings offense emerge as one of the best in the NFL this season?
Consistency is not a word that many would use to describe the offense of the Minnesota Vikings since the team hired Mike Zimmer to be their head coach in 2014.
Since Zimmer came aboard, the Vikings have started 19 different offensive lineman and six different quarterbacks. During this time period Minnesota has also had four different players lead the team in rushing and three different guys lead the team in catches.
So what did the Vikings do this offseason? Bring in a new quarterback obviously.
In an effort to actually have some consistency on the offensive side of the ball for the next few seasons, the Vikings went out and spent $84 million to sign free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins this year. Minnesota also made sure to lock up one of their top receivers in Stefon Diggs with an extension that keeps him with the team until 2024.
Also new to the Vikings this year is offensive coordinator John DeFilippo. After spending the last two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota was able to lure DeFilippo to their sidelines for 2018.
He will be the Vikings’ third different offensive coordinator during Zimmer’s tenure with the team.
So despite all of this lack of consistency, Minnesota is still expected to have a pretty potent offense this season. Is that something that will actually happen?
