Are the Minnesota Vikings about to retire No. 84 this year?
By Adam Patrick
A recent number change could indicate that the Minnesota Vikings have plans in the works to retire the legendary jersey number in the near future.
As they were getting their final roster situated for the upcoming regular season, the Minnesota Vikings made a small announcement this past Sunday regarding four players changing their jersey numbers.
The Vikings revealed that new safety George Iloka has now switched to No. 23, cornerback Holton Hill will now wear No. 24, defensive tackle David Parry is switching to No. 95, and wide receiver Chad Beebe will now don a No. 12 on his jersey.
Beebe, who is currently signed to Minnesota’s practice squad, was previously the most recent member of the franchise to wear No. 84. This jersey number has been worn by a number of Vikings players in the recent past, but none made it more famous than Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss.
With Moss’ induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year and Beebe’s recent number change, could Minnesota have plans to finally retire No. 84 at some point during the upcoming season?
If they do, it has certainly been a longtime coming.
Moss re-energized a Vikings fan base from the second he stepped on the field as a rookie in 1998. The talented receiver made every Minnesota game worth watching even if it only resulted in him making one spectacular play and not several.
Yes, Moss was only with the Vikings for half of his NFL career. But his time in Minnesota is what he is most known for.
The majority of top moments in Moss’ career feature him chasing down deep balls, catching touchdowns, and jumping into the stands to celebrate with fans all while wearing a purple and gold No. 84 jersey.
During their existence as a franchise, the Vikings have only retired six jersey numbers. Will they make it seven this season?
