Trae Waynes will get burned for a long touchdown
2018 is a crucial year for Waynes as it could possibly be his last in a Vikings uniform. Minnesota did pick up the fifth-year option on his contract back in April, but they still have to decide if they will exercise it in 2019 or not.
During his time in Minnesota, Waynes’ play has been pretty solid. Not spectacular, but solid. However, the Vikings drafted Waynes in the first round in 2015 and his performance hasn’t really matched the expectations that came with being selected so high.
His first matchup this year will likely pit him against speedy 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin. Although his all-around skills have improved over the past few seasons, Goodwin is still known around the NFL as a straight up burner.
The San Francisco pass catcher was second in the league last season with a 17.2 yards per reception average. Not too long ago, Goodwin actually caught a 46-yard touchdown pass inside U.S. Bank Stadium against Minnesota’s first-team defense during a 2017 preseason matchup.
Last year, Waynes gave up four passes of 40 yards or more. With Xavier Rhodes lining up on the other side of the Vikings’ defense, bet on the 49ers throwing more towards Waynes’ direction and attempting to exploit his less than impressive coverage on deep passes.
