Mike Zimmer’s job is not even close to being in danger
By Adam Patrick
Despite some early struggles this season, the current head coach of the Minnesota Vikings has absolutely no reason to worry about his future with the team.
From 2014 to 2017, the Minnesota Vikings won 39 games with Mike Zimmer as their head coach. No head coach in Vikings team history has led the franchise to more wins in their first four seasons than Zimmer (not even the legendary Bud Grant).
This year, Minnesota is off to a slow start and sitting with a 1-2-1 record after four weeks. Despite the team’s success in the recent past with Zimmer leading the way, there are actually some people out there who believe the head coach’s job could be in jeopardy if the Vikings end up struggling all season long.
To put it nicely, that is one of the dumbest thoughts any Minnesota fan could have right now. Especially looking back at the Vikings’ recent success under Zimmer.
With him as their head coach last year, Minnesota won 13 games for the first time in franchise history, they finished first in the NFC North for the second time in three seasons, and the team made it all the way to the NFC Championship.
Judging a team just four weeks into a season is no way to go about living life either.
In 2017 and 2015, the Vikings began each season with two losses in their first four games. Despite their “struggles”, Minnesota went on to win the NFC North in each of those years.
During the 2016 season, the Vikings won each of their first four games. However, Minnesota didn’t even end up making the playoffs that year.
So even if the Vikings are actually struggling four weeks into the 2018 season, there is still really no way to predict how the rest of their year will turn out.
And even if Minnesota doesn’t end up making the playoffs this season, Zimmer’s job still won’t be in jeopardy. Good luck finding another head coach who can lead a team to success while having a different Week 1 starting quarterback in each of his first five years with the team.
Zimmer and his coaching staff can only do so much. It’s up to Minnesota’s players to go out on the field and execute.
So if anyone should be worried about their future with the Vikings right now, it’s the guys that actually put on the pads each week.
