Kirk Cousins on pace to shatter a Vikings all-time record in 2018
By Adam Patrick
After five games, the Minnesota Vikings quarterback is on pace to set a new franchise record this year for passing yards in a single season
So far, there have only been a few consistencies when it comes to the Minnesota Vikings this season. Each week, the Vikings have been able to count on Adam Thielen catching everything thrown his way, their kickers missing easy field goal attempts, and Kirk Cousins passing for around 300 yards.
Like Thielen, Cousins’ pace through Minnesota’s first five games this year has him on track to set numerous franchise records. Especially the Vikings’ all-time single-season record for passing yards.
Heading into Week 6, Minnesota’s current quarterback has already thrown for 1,688 yards. Cousins has passed for at least 295 yards in four of his five starts this year.
His passing yardage total so far is the second-most in Vikings history for a quarterback in the first five games of a season. Only Daunte Culpepper in 2004 threw for more yards (1,766) in the first five weeks of season than Cousins has this year.
Despite Culpepper having more yards through five games in 2004 than Cousins this year, Minnesota’s current quarterback is still on pace to break the team’s single-season passing yardage record (set by Culpepper in 2004)
Based on his numbers from his first five starts, Cousins is on track to finish with 5,402 passing yards in 2018. Only five quarterbacks in NFL history have thrown for 5,000 yards or more in a single season and none have done it in a Vikings uniform.
At this point, there is no reason to believe that Cousins won’t break Minnesota’s all-time single-season passing yardage record this year. Especially if Thielen and fellow Vikings receiver Stefon Diggs are able to remain healthy for the majority of the year.
