Former Vikings running back continuing his career in new football league

Former Minnesota Vikings running back Matt Asiata is still pursuing his dream as a professional football player as a member of the AAF’s Salt Lake Stallions.

Much like another former Minnesota Vikings running back before him, Leroy Hoard, Matt Asiata was very consistent with what he brought to the field each week.

If the Vikings needed Asiata to get them a yard, he got them a yard. And if Minnesota needed him to gain three yards, well, he still got them just one yard.

Now, after spending five seasons with the Vikings and a brief stint with the Detroit Lions in 2017, Asiata is taking his talents to the new Alliance of American Football league. The former Minnesota running back has signed on with the AAF’s Salt Lake Stallions.

It’s a unique opportunity for Asiata to play in front of some of his hometown fans since the running back grew up and played college football in Utah.

Signed as an undrafted free-agent in 2011, Asiata first appeared in a regular season game for the Vikings in 2012. Thanks to injuries and suspensions to other members of Minnesota’s offensive backfield, Asiata ended up appearing in 74 games during his five years with the Vikings, rushing for 1,259 yards and scoring a total of 19 touchdowns.

After drafting Dalvin Cook and signing Latavius Murray during the offseason, Minnesota decided not to bring back Asiata in 2017. He eventually signed with the Lions, but he did not end up making Detroit’s final roster last season.

Asiata is one of many former Vikings players to sign with teams in the AAF this year including David Cobb, Terrell Newby, Peter Pujols, Edmond Robinson, Bishop Sankey, Will Sutton, Nick Truesdell, Brandon Watts, and Jake Wieneke.
