Adding new pieces to an offensive line during the middle of the season always seems like a bit of a risk. But if that piece is a blocker with starting experience, the transition can become a little easier.

The Vikings have already started two players at right tackle this year in rookie Brian O’Neill and Rashod Hill. And while O’Neill has shown flashes of potential at times, he has still had plenty of moments where his lack of experience ends up being a weakness.

If Minnesota had their way, they would probably prefer to keep the rookie off of the field and have him spend the rest of the season learning from the sidelines. But due to injuries, the Vikings have been forced to play O’Neill a bunch already this year.

Trading with the Dolphins for James could be a way for Minnesota to get their rookie back on the bench.

James has started every game at right tackle for Miami this season and he has only given up a total of seven quarterback pressures. He’s currently in the last year of his rookie contract which has him at a current salary of more than $9 million.

In order to acquire James from the Dolphins, the Vikings may have to include a player or two to free up some extra cap space. It seems like a bit of a difficult task to accomplish, but Minnesota’s front office has been known to pull a few rabbits out of their hats in the past.
