Round 3: Porter Gustin, outside linebacker, USC

This will be a spot where the Vikings can gamble a little bit. Even with Gustin being out for the year at USC with a fractured ankle, he should be healthy in time for the 2019 NFL season…especially if Minnesota is forced to move on from Anthony Barr.

Gustin looks like the kind of linebacker Mike Zimmer loves. Standing 6-foot-5 and weighing in at 260 pounds, he has the ability to both be a great tackler and rush the passer as well as be decent enough in coverage to suffice.

In four seasons at USC, the linebacker accumulated 137 tackles, 21.5 of those being sacks, in just 34 games played, adding 5 pass defenses and one fumble recovery while playing outside linebacker.

For a selection the Vikings will get for Case Keenum leaving in free agency, getting a skillful linebacker to add to a weak grouping is the kind of risk the team can take when a player is coming off a big injury.

Other options for third-round selections:

  • Jamel Dean, CB – Auburn
  • Shareef Miller, DE – Penn St.
