The Minnesota Vikings have reportedly claimed former Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah on waivers, adding him to their 53-man roster.

The Minnesota Vikings may have gotten a big win against the Lions on Sunday which included ten sacks, but that wasn’t the only thing the team got from Detroit this week according to a recent report.

Adam Schefter, NFL Insider for ESPN, tweeted that Minnesota has claimed recently released running back Ameer Abdullah from waivers following his release in favor of Bruce Ellington in Detroit according to his sources.

Abdullah joins a team which already features star running back Dalvin Cook and Latavius Murray along with two undrafted free agents: Mike Boone and Roc Thomas. However, one of the young halfbacks will likely be released to make room for Abdullah and the team could try to get the cut player back to the practice squad.

Playing 35 games in from 2015-2018 and starting 22 of those, Abdullah has accumulated 1,251 yards on the ground and scored six rushing touchdowns while adding 57 catches for 420 yards and three additional scores.

Considering the team’s needs, it was a bit surprising to see the Vikings claim a running back from waivers. However, it should always be a team’s goal to improve their roster whenever possible and adding a more experienced player with starting experience can do just that for a franchise.

Abdullah was a second-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in the 2014 NFL Draft and was set to become a free agent after this season. With the emergence of Kerryon Johnson, the hard-nosed style of LeGarrette Blount, and the return of Theo Riddick, the Lions possibly just didn’t have a place for their former draft selection and cut ties before letting him walk in free agency after the season.

We at The Viking Age would like to welcome the reported new addition Ameer Abdullah to the Minnesota Vikings and hope that his experience can bring some help to the team’s rushing offense. More information on the transactions should be available in the near future.
