Zimmer’s risk was the right call

With his team up by 10 and facing a 4th and 2 on the Packers’ 7-yard line, Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer decided to keep his offense on the field instead of kicking an easy field goal.

Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins took the snap and fired a pass to the left side of the field in the direction of receiver Stefon Diggs. Unfortunately though, Cousins’ pass was batted down by a Green Bay defender and the Vikings turned the ball over on downs.

Even though Minnesota didn’t end up getting the first down, Zimmer reminded his team that he isn’t afraid to take a few chances during a game. A decision like this instills confidence in his players, no matter if the play is successful or not.

The Vikings’ head coach wanted that drive to end with a touchdown and put the contest completely out of reach for the Packers and All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Of course, Zimmer knew his defense was playing well on Sunday and they would probably stop a comeback effort by Rodgers. But Minnesota’s head coach didn’t want to give the Green Bay quarterback a chance to even try.

This is the kind of decision-making the Vikings are going to need from Zimmer during their final five games of the season. Minnesota has some tough opponents coming up and they are going to need their head coach to continue to have faith in their abilities in order to get some big wins.
