MVP – Defense

Mackensie Alexander, cornerback

Last week, Mackensie Alexander was praised for taking steps toward being a more complete corner after having a strong game against the Seahawks. Guess what? That might not be just a fluke of a game.

Alexander only had four tackles on the day, but all four of them were solo efforts and one of them was for a loss. Mike Zimmer is comfortable with letting the defensive back play at multiple spots on the field, which says a lot for his progress.

His tackling and pressure of quarterbacks have been good, but his coverage has been even better. Alexander defended two passes during this game, even positioning himself for an interception on a Matthew Stafford pass before it was knocked away by Kenny Golladay. Considering the team only had four pass breakups on the day, seeing half of them come from one player is impressive.

When Mike Hughes went down for the season with an ACL tear, there was some concern about who would step up and show their worth in the Minnesota Vikings cornerback grouping. Both Alexander and Holton Hill are showing why the defensive depth is something fans should be very impressed with.
