When Mike Zimmer blocked Stefanski from interviewing with the New York Giants last year for their offensive coordinator opening, it was clear that the Vikings head coach saw something he liked in his assistant.

Stefanski has been on Minnesota’s staff for the entire duration of Zimmer’s tenure with the team. In fact, the Vikings assistant has been with the organization since 2006 when Brad Childress was the team’s head coach.

Stefanski’s experience with working under Zimmer and being with the team for so long is what gives him the edge over other candidates.

He wasn’t just randomly selected to become the Vikings’ interim offensive coordinator when John DeFilippo was let go after Week 14. Stefanski was selected as the next guy in line because Zimmer felt he could do well in the role.

Given that he only has three games of experience as a play-caller in the NFL, this may be the one thing preventing Minnesota from already naming Stefanski as the team’s offensive coordinator for 2019.
