Why the Vikings bringing back Case Keenum would be a horrible idea

2017 was a fluke

Looking at Keenum’s entire tenure in the NFL, there is one season that doesn’t fit in with the rest. That would be his lone year with the Vikings in 2017.

With Minnesota last season, Keenum helped lead the team to 11 wins in his 14 starts. During his other 40 career starts, the veteran quarterback has been on the winning side of the field just 15 times.

During his lone season with the Vikings in 2017, Keenum had the luxury of Pat Shurmur as his offensive coordinator, Minnesota having a top 10 rushing attack, and the team’s defense being arguably the best in the NFL.

It’s not a hard argument to make that the quarterback benefited greatly from a variety of different elements during his time with the Vikings. There is no guarantee that Keenum would be able to duplicate or even have a similar performance to what he did out on the field in 2017 if Minnesota decided to bring him back.

Even if he were to come back to the Vikings as a backup, the team should want someone for the job who has consistently proven to be reliable under center. Keenum’s performance with the Broncos last season proved that his play actually hasn’t taken a turn in the right direction like some might have believed it would following his 2017 campaign with Minnesota.
