Re-grading the Minnesota Vikings’ 2016 rookie class
By Nik Edlund
Round 6
Mortiz Böhringer – WR (Germany)
Böhringer was a fun story for the NFL during the later portion of the 2016 draft, as he was the first European player ever drafted who didn’t have any collegiate experience.
Unfortunately for the Vikings, Böhringer wasn’t ever much more than a feel-good story. He had a decent training camp as a rookie in 2016 and even though he didn’t make Minnesota’s final 53-man roster, he was signed to the practice squad.
Böhringer hung around there for the entire season and he ended up signing a reserve/future contract with the Vikings in January of 2017. However, Minnesota did decide to cut him again at the end of training camp later that year.
The “German Randy Moss” later signed with the Cincinnati Bengals, who decided to convert him to a tight end. Böhringer is currently still property of the Bengals, but his chances of having any sort of impact for them look slim.
Grade: 0/0
David Morgan – TE (Texas-San Antonio)
As surprising as it may be, the truth is that Morgan has been one of the most productive players from this draft class. He’s appeared in 38 games for the Vikings and started 12 of them.
Morgan hasn’t exactly lit the world on fire with his receiving ability since he’s only hauled in a total of 16 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown during his time with Minnesota.
What he is though is a good blocker who also plays well on special teams. Morgan may have gorgeous flowing locks, but he hasn’t been a sexy pick of the team, just a solid role player. Sometimes, that’s all a team is looking for with a late-round pick.
