7 draft prospects the Vikings probably regret passing on
By Nik Edlund
2018 Fifth-Round
Original Pick: Daniel Carlson – K (Auburn)
Daniel Carlson just didn’t work out for the Vikings. Minnesota moved up to get him after getting an inconsistent performance from Kai Forbath in 2017.
Carlson struggled mightily with the Vikings and he melted down completely at Lambeau Field in Week 2 last season.
He is now kicking for the Oakland Raiders after performing pretty well for them last year. Carlson may end up having a long and illustrious career, but it isn’t going to be with Minnesota and it all adds up to a wasted pick.
Could’ve Had: Marquez Valdes-Scantling – WR (South Florida)
Let’s not kid ourselves, Marquez Valdes-Scantling didn’t exactly light the world on fire during his rookie season with the Green Bay Packers, but he was solid.
Injuries opened the door for Valdes-Scantling to get on the field for the Packers and he did end up earning the trust of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, hauling in 38 receptions for 581 yards and a couple of touchdowns in 2018. That is pretty good production from a fifth-round rookie wideout.
One of the Vikings’ needs as they approach the 2019 Draft is a wide receiver, especially one with some size. Valdes-Scantling is 6-foot-4, 206 pounds and he definitely fits that mold and he showed good hands and route running ability last season.
If Minnesota would have pulled the trigger on the young receiver a year ago, they’d have one less need as they head into the 2019 draft.
