2017 Fifth Round

Original Pick: Rodney Adams – WR (South Florida)

The Vikings grabbed a couple of wide receivers in the 2017 NFL Draft and neither of them panned out. Rodney Adams was their first choice as they liked what they saw on tape out of the 6-foot-1, 190 pound prospect out of South Florida.

He was pretty productive in college and he also was an experienced return man. None of Adams’ ability translated to the NFL though, as he was waived by Minnesota midway through the 2017 season. He was then signed to the Vikings’ practice squad, but that didn’t stick either.

He played around with the Indianapolis Colts for a bit after leaving Minnesota, but his NFL career is now all but over.

The Vikings got zero receptions out of this fifth-round draft choice and it isn’t a pick that Rick Spielman will want to remember.

Could’ve Had: Xavier Woods – S (Louisiana Tech)

It appears that Minnesota may have finally found a safety to play next to Harrison Smith in Anthony Harris. But the safety position had been a thorn in the Vikings’ side for quite a few seasons.

Little did they realize, Minnesota had the solution staring them in the face in the fifth round of the 2017 Draft.

Xavier Woods was a big hitting safety out of Louisiana Tech and he has produced early in his NFL career. Woods started four games as a rookie for the Dallas Cowboys and he racked up 42 tackles, three pass breakups, and one interception.

Last year, he had 14 starts and continued to impress. Woods would’ve been a great choice for the Vikings as his play would’ve made Andrew Sendejo expendable a season ago and it would’ve saved the team some cash.

Instead, Minnesota drafted a receiver who never caught a pass for them.
