The Minnesota Vikings have decided to part ways with the rookie wide receiver just one week after being a part of the active game-day roster for the first time this season.

Looking to add some more playmakers to their offense this offseason, the Minnesota Vikings opted to select South Florida wide receiver Rodney Adams with a fifth-round pick in last spring’s NFL Draft.

Adams was a touchdown machine during his final two seasons at South Florida. As a junior and a senior, the receiver found the end zone an impressive 27 different times. Minnesota hoped that his touchdown habits in college would carry over into the NFL.

During the preseason, Adams had a few bright moments. In four games, he caught nine passes for 73 yards and two touchdown. However, he also fumbled twice.

Heading into the regular season, the receiver was believed by some to be a candidate for the Vikings’ open kick returner spot. But Adams ended up getting beat out for the job by veteran Minnesota running back Jerick McKinnon.

When the Vikings cut their offseason roster down to 53 in September, the rookie was one of six wide receivers the team decided to keep. But despite earning a spot on the Vikings’ regular season roster, Adams has been a healthy scratch in seven of the team’s eight games this year.

On Monday, Minnesota decided that the time had come to part ways with the rookie receiver. The Vikings announced that they had waived Adams and added running back Mack Brown to take the receiver’s open spot. With Andrew Sendejo’s one-game suspension now finished, Minnesota also waived center Cornelius Edison on Monday.

Of the Vikings 10 draft selections from this year, Adams is the third to be let go by the team. Tight end Bucky Hodges (sixth-round pick) and linebacker Elijah Lee (seventh-round pick) were both among the team’s final cuts during the offseason.

No word yet on whether or not Minnesota will sign add Adams to the practice squad if he ends up clearing waivers.
