Aldrick Robinson showed that he can fill a role in the Minnesota Vikings offense and should get an opportunity to return to the team in 2019.
The Minnesota Vikings had two pass catchers go for over 1,000 yards during the 2018 NFL season with both Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen having great performances. However, it was a midseason signing which turned out to be a deep threat and efficient player.
On Sept. 17, 2018, the Vikings signed Aldrick Robinson after things didn’t work out with former Bears receiver Kendall Wright. Arriving before the Week 3 game against the Bills, he played against Buffalo and caught one pass for nine yards. After that, Robinson picked things up in a big way.
He finished the season with only 231 receiving yards, but hauled in five touchdowns and averaged 13.59 yards per reception. Fans will remember his big game against the Rams in Week 4 the most since he caught two passes for 33 yards and two touchdowns in that contest.
Since he has shown he can be a productive complementary receiver to Diggs and Thielen, Minnesota should definitely be considering bringing Robinson back for the 2019 NFL season even with young, talented players like Brandon Zylstra and Chad Beebe waiting in the wings…even if it means cutting ties with Laquon Treadwell.
Treadwell is coming off his best season as a pro, catching 35 passes for 302 yards and one touchdown but still lost time to Robinson in the offense, especially in third and long situations. Plus, Robinson seems to have a bit of a rapport with Kirk Cousins, especially in deep passes and near the end zone which adds to his value and would immediately make him the team’s third wide receiver.
Finally, bringing Aldrick Robinson shouldn’t be too expensive. The Minnesota Vikings don’t have much money left in terms of their salary cap, so finding inexpensive players to fill roles should be a priority. There has been interest shown by Robinson on returning, but the team should feel the same way about reuniting in 2019.
