Round 7 Pick 1:  Dexter Williams, running back – Notre Dame

The Minnesota Vikings are looking as though they will allow Latavius Murray to test free agency to see what kind of market there is for his services during 2019. That means he could sign elsewhere and the team could need more competition.

Add in the recent legal issues in Roc Thomas and you have a situation where drafting a running back needs to be a priority, but an early pick isn’t necessary considering Minnesota Dalvin Cook will be the team’s number one rusher.

Dexter Williams is a bit of a late bloomer. His best year at Notre Dame came his final season there where he got 158 carries compared to 99 in his previous three years. The extra work allowed Williams to come within five yards of a 1,000-yard season and had him finding the end zone 12 times.

The good news is that Minnesota can ease Williams into everything. Sitting behind Cook or Mike Boone could help his transition to the pro level where he will likely push the five-foot-eleven and 215-pound running back once again to get more opportunities.
