The CEO of the New York Jets recently commented on Anthony Barr’s decision not to sign with them and return to the Minnesota Vikings this year.
Two weeks ago, Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr made headlines with his shocking decision to stay with the team after previously giving a verbal commitment to the New York Jets.
This week, Jets CEO Christopher Johnson decided to comment publicly on the matter and he did not hold back. Johnson spoke with reporters at the annual league meeting on Monday and offered up his thoughts on the last minute move by Barr.
"“We want people on our team who want to be New York Jets. Not everybody wants to be in New York. If he didn’t want to be here, that’s fine. It’s disappointing when someone backs out on an agreement, but we want people who are all-in.”"
The four time Pro-Bowler made it clear that he was not, “all-in,” during his press conference with the local Twin Cities media shortly after the free agency plot twist was heard around the world saying the thought of leaving Minnesota, “didn’t feel right,” and describing the day he told his agent to accept the Jets’ offer as, “one of the worst days of my life.”
A solemn day for Barr no doubt turned into one of the most exciting days in free agency for the Vikings organization and fans alike this year.
Finding a way to retain Stefon Diggs, Danielle Hunter, Eric Kendricks, and now Barr is nothing short of miraculous, especially considering Barr’s contract will only cost Minnesota $5.6 million in cap space this year.
Considering this most recent debacle and Kirk Cousins turning down a better deal from New York in order to join the Vikings in 2018, Minnesota may have a new rival in the AFC.
