Max Scharping (Northern Illinois)

Scharping is a guy who the Vikings could look to add on Day 3 of this year’s draft. He’s got good size at 6-foot-6 and 327 pounds and he is very experienced since he was a four-year starter at Northern Illinois.

He has some versatility playing both right and left tackle in college and there are scouts who believe he could move inside to guard in the NFL.

Scharping is a far better run blocker than a pass protector. He can hold his own against bull rushers, but he struggles with his footwork as a pass blocker.

One huge factor in his favor is that he is very intelligent and he understands the nuances of a play and his role in it. That helps him overcome some of the shortcomings of his overall technique and athletic ability.

Scharping could come off the board anytime between rounds four to six this year. If the Vikings are on the clock during that span and he’s available, it would make a ton of sense to take him.

He can provide depth at three spots on Minnesota’s offensive line and he would be Brian O’Neill’s primary backup at right tackle from day one. That’s a huge value for a late-round choice and while he may never be an everyday starter, he could become an above average backup in the league for a long time.
