5. Will Mike Zimmer grab another early-round cornerback?

It’s kind of a running joke amongst Vikings fans about head coach Mike Zimmer’s love for cornerbacks and his desire to take one early in the draft over more pressing needs. Will that trend continue in 2019?

A week ago that seemed like an absolute zero percent chance of being a reality. But after the news of Holton Hill’s suspension, those who don’t want Minnesota to take an early round corner started feeling a little nervous.

Yes, Hill’s suspension does make this topic a little more discussion worthy. But it still seems like a long shot that the Vikings would use an early pick on one of their deepest positions.

Even without Hill for the first four games in 2019, Minnesota still has Xavier Rhodes, Trae Waynes, Mackensie Alexander, and hopefully a recovered Mike Hughes topping the depth chart. That’s a better foursome than most teams in the NFL today.

Behind those guys are Jalen Myrick, Craig James, and newly signed AAF alum, Duke Thomas. It’s likely only one of those guys make the final 53-man roster, but it should be a good battle.

With all that depth, it’s hard to find a place for a rookie in there. Even so, it still can’t be completely ruled out that Zimmer won’t convince Rick Spielman to take one early. Zimmer would love a guy like Greedy Williams with his lanky arms, great size, and blazing speed.

The argument could be made that both Waynes and Alexander will be gone in the not so distant future and another cover man is needed. If the Vikings do take a corner over offensive line help early in this year’s Draft, fans could riot, and many a TV could be destroyed. We’ll see soon enough if Zimmer gets his way or not.
