Minnesota Vikings: 10 best fourth-round draft picks of all-time
By Adam Carlson
7. Buster Rhymes, kick returner – 1985
This spot might be a little high for a one-year wonder, but even then his one of his two seasons as a return man for the Minnesota Vikings left a pretty big impression on the franchise and set the bar for yardage.
As a rookie in 1985, Buster Rhymes returned 53 kickoffs for a total of 1,345 yards, both of which were the most of any player in the NFL. His average return of 25.4 yards consistently gave the team excellent field position that year.
Sadly, he wasn’t much of a weapon as a wide receiver, catching only eight passes for 149 yards during his 20 games wearing purple and gold. And he was only able to return nine kickoffs for 213 yards in his second year with Minnesota before going to the CFL.
Most notably, Rhymes with the inspiration for rapper Chuck D of the group Public Enemy when he gave the nickname Busta Rhymes to Trevor George Smith Jr., proving the reach of former Vikings players goes quite far, even into the rap community.
