Third Round

Isaiah Johnson – CB (Houston)

For 2019, the Vikings are not in need of a starting cornerback. But there is a good chance they will be in 2020 and Johnson could be the guy to step into that role.

He has a lot of the traits that Mike Zimmer looks for in a corner for Minnesota’s roster. Johnson measures in at 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, he is at his best when playing man coverage, and he uses his physicality to his advantage.

Of course, he also has areas of his game that he has to work on before he develops into a solid NFL starter. Being a converted wide receiver, this is not a surprise. So Johnson would benefit greatly from sitting back for a year or two and learning from Zimmer and the rest of the Vikings’ defensive coaches.

The former Houston corner has met with Minnesota in private this offseason, so the interest from the Vikings is definitely there.

If Minnesota actually does end up drafting Johnson this year, he would be a great addition to the depth of their defensive backfield. He could possibly even take over the duties of Holton Hill until he returns from his four-game suspension at the start of next season.

Everyone knows Zimmer loves himself a young corner that he can mold into a talented starter. If Johnson is able to land with the Vikings, the sky seems like the limit for him based on the great minds that he will be able to learn from.
