The Bad

There aren’t a lot of things to dislike about the game of Alexander Mattison, but every prospect has areas they need to work on as well as tendencies they may need to correct when moving to the NFL level.

Here are some things that Mattison may need to work on or he might lack:

Lacking high top gear

Despite some great power and acceleration, don’t expect to see a lot of long runs from Mattison. He’s more of a grinder and bowling ball than a home-run hitter. You can expect him to consistently have positive gains, but rarely will you see him break a run of 20 yards or more. This will be the biggest knock against him.

Dancing with the ball

When cutting or waiting for a hole to develop, Mattison has a tendency to keep his feet moving and take unnecessary steps which could delay his forward push. While this doesn’t happen too often, it is something to watch for if the offensive line continues to struggle. However, if holes are present, this shouldn’t be an issue.

Extra confidence in his power

One thing for certain is that Mattison will need to learn when to give up a play. When stopped, he will aggressively push forward and absorb a lot of unnecessary punishment which will be even scarier at the NFL level. With his aggressive nature and determination, he may not ever want to surrender himself during a play.
