Mike Zimmer is known for loving defensive backs and the Minnesota Vikings got him a new toy the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft by picking Marcus Epps.

The 2019 NFL Draft continued on Saturday with the event moving into Round 6 where the Minnesota Vikings owned several selections thanks to compensatory picks and trades on draft day.

One of those selections came at pick 191 overall where the team decided to select Wyoming defensive back Marcus Epps, a four-year starter in college with their second pick of the sixth round.

Here is the announcement of the draft pick from the official Twitter account of the Minnesota Vikings:

Marcus Epps is a six-foot-tall and 191-pound player who is projected to play safety by NFL.com. In 50 games played he accumulated 324 total tackles (214 solo), 18.5 tackles for a loss, nine interceptions, five forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, two sacks, and one defensive touchdown.

Epps could see some special teams work as a rookie, but he also joins a group of safeties depleted by the exit of former starter Andrew Sendejo. If he can impress the team enough, there is a really good chance he will be on the team’s 53-man roster when the regular season rolls around.

Known for having a high football intelligence coupled with good instincts, Epps looked great in 2018 by working on his tackling technique. However, fans should be excited to find out if his ball-hawking skills and nose for the football translate well to the NFL level.
