5 Vikings who could be entering their final season with the team
By Nik Edlund
Laquon Treadwell – WR
Like Jaleel Johnson, Treadwell is by no means a lock to make the Vikings’ final 2019 roster. This former first-round pick has been arguably Minnesota’s biggest draft bust since the team took Christian Ponder in 2011.
Treadwell’s career stat line is a very unimpressive 56 receptions, 517 yards, and one touchdown. Those numbers are mediocre for one season, let alone three.
Treadwell was supposed to give the Vikings the big, physical target they were lacking. He is big, but he hasn’t been much of a target.
Early in his career, he had trouble grasping the playbook and he ran very bad routes. Last year, he came down with a case of the dropsies and drew the ire of Mike Zimmer and the offensive coaching staff.
Treadwell will have to be very impressive to make the team in 2019. Minnesota drafted two guys in Dillon Mitchell and Olabisi Johnson and also brought in free agent Jordan Taylor from Denver. Factor in guys like Chad Beebe, Brandon Zylstra, and Jeff Badet from a season ago, and the Vikings’ wide receiver competition behind Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs becomes much more fierce.
Minnesota knows what they have in Treadwell and if he doesn’t play out of his mind this preseason, there is no reason for them not to dump him and go with a younger and much cheaper option.
