Can Matt Wile be a better holder this season?

Giving someone a job they had never done before is always a challenge. It takes time to learn the job and become familiar and comfortable with it. For punter Matt Wile, it was being a holder which was new to him in 2018.

There were struggles. Crooked holds, odd placements, and even putting the laces out (C’mon Dan…) at least once. With another training camp and preseason to perfect the craft, fans have to be hopeful these errors are corrected.

It’s strange to think of a holder as being such an important position, but with a missed field goal keeping three points off the board, it is an issue that needs to be addressed. And if he can’t improve, the team may need to explore other options for the job.

Secondary question: What is the deal with Austin Cutting?

Drafting a long snapper who won’t be able to play for multiple years to possibly replace Kevin McDermott was a confusing move and may do more to hurt the confidence of their current starter. Austin Cutting better be one heck of a dynamo when he makes the roster to get this treatment.
