Minnesota Vikings: 10 best fifth round draft picks of all time
By Adam Carlson
2. Ed McDaniel, LB – 1992
At first, it didn’t look like Ed McDaniel would be anything special for the Vikings. In his first two seasons with Minnesota, he only played in 15 games and started one contest where he totaled 30 tackles.
In 1994, he moved into a starting role where he held down a spot in the defense for seven seasons and even earned a Pro Bowl nod in 1998 when he registered career highs in tackles (128) and sacks (7).
In his nine NFL seasons, he played in 125 regular-season games for the Vikings in his career, starting 109 of those and saw action in 11 playoff games. His career stats of 794 tackles, (603 solo), 19.5 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, and four interceptions proved that he could do anything the team asked him to do.
To get a player with that kind of longevity and ability to contribute in the fifth round of the NFL Draft is quite a value. These days, McDaniel is a co-owner of D1 Sports Training and owns several apartment buildings in the Twin Cities.
