Former Vikings head coach gets street named for him in Harrisburg, PA

Fans of the Minnesota Vikings visiting Harrisburg, Pennsylvania will want to make a quick stop to visit Dennis Green Way, named after the former head coach.

When naming the greatest head coaches in Minnesota Vikings history, it won’t take long to reach Dennis Green. With the team from 1992 through 2001, he led the purple and gold to a 97-62 record with his the squad appearing in 12 playoff games.

Green is second all-time in franchise history when it comes to wins as a head coach (97), win percentage (61 percent), and playoff game appearances (12), coming in behind only Pro Football Hall of Fame coach Bud Grant.

A beloved part of the team’s history and adored by fans, Dennis Green entered the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor in 2018. However, he recently was honored back in his hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania as well.

According to Pro Football Talk, a portion of the street where he grew up in the city has been dedicated in his honor.

The section of Walnut Street, the 1100 through 1300 blocks, was declared Dennis Green Way on Saturday with fans, family, and friends in attendance at the reveal. Penn Live spoke with Dennis’ brother Billy about the honor:

"“Anytime I come down this street from 13th street I’m going to see Dennis Green Way. I’m going to smile, maybe laugh a bit and maybe I’m going to have a few tears. It’s an emotional thing. That’s our baby brother and there he is recognized.”"

Dennis Green passed away three years ago, but his legacy will live on. It’s great to know that he was appreciated by people everywhere, not just those who were touched by his legacy within football organizations but by the community where he grew up as well as the individuals who knew him over the years.

This is a fantastic move from the people of Harrisburg and one that a great head coach like Dennis Green deserves. Fans of the Vikings in the area should definitely visit Dennis Green Way if they are ever in the area!
