4. Safety

Safety may be a surprise on this list of the Vikings’ strongest positions because they always seem to be looking for one in the draft. But like the wide receivers, the players at the top of this group are so strong, it is a position that has to be respected.

Obviously, it all starts with Harrison Smith. He’s simply one of the best safeties in the NFL. He’s got outstanding range, he can hit, he can cover, and he is a big play waiting to happen. Smith is the leader of Minnesota’s secondary and he is someone his teammates look up to and rally around.

Joining Smith and really improving the strength of this unit, is last year’s breakout star, Anthony Harris. Harris finally gave the Vikings the Ying to Smith’s Yang and the two were a formidable tandem on the back end of the team’s defense a season ago.

Harris eventually took over the starting job last year and after a few weeks, opposing teams quit throwing the ball his way. In nine starts and 15 total appearances last season, he had 46 tackles and 3 interceptions and he was making just as many plays as The Hitman.

Behind the two studs on Minnesota’s safety depth chart is Jayron Kearse. Kearse has been a special teams standout since being drafted by the Vikings in 2016.

He has played more safety in recent seasons and he has shown he can hold his own. Kearse is a very solid backup and the team should be confident if he has to come in and play for an extended period of time in 2019.

Minnesota’s fourth safety spot is still up in the air as we approach the team’s 2019 training camp. But the Vikings are at least three deep with this group and they are, overall, very strong at the safety position.
