5 weakest positions on the 2019 Minnesota Vikings
By Nik Edlund
2. Weakside Linebacker
The Vikings’ defense has been better than its offense for a few seasons now, so it may be surprising to see a unit on that side of the ball on this list. With its overall lack of talent and scant depth, weakside linebacker is definitely one of the weakest positions on Minnesota’s current roster.
Let’s look at the top. Ben Gedeon is really nothing special. This dude just screams average. He isn’t bad, but he does next to nothing that stands out.
During his career with the Vikings, he has no sacks and zero interceptions. He just doesn’t make plays. Weakside linebacker isn’t a key position in Mike Zimmer’s defense, but this is a position that could clearly use a talent upgrade.
Behind Gedeon is Kentrell Brothers. Brothers was a tackling machine in college, but he hasn’t been able to do much of anything at the pro level. He’s mustered just 32 career tackles in three seasons and isn’t a lock to make Minnesota’s roster in 2019.
Rounding out the depth chart is Reshard Cliett. Cliett looked good during the preseason last year, but he spent all of 2018 on the Vikings’ practice squad. He flashes from time to time, but he lacks experience and if he were to see the field for a game or two next season, the defense would likely take a step backward.
Overall, this is a unit that is basically made up of guys whose skill sets are better suited for special teams and is weak from top to bottom.
